There are several Inuit artist couples whose works are so stylistically similar that, absent signatures, it is hard to differentiate one from the other. One perfect example would be Martha Ikiperiak Eekerkik and her husband Romeo (1923-1983). Both Martha and Romeo constructed their sculptures from numerous, often contrasting elements. They also experimented with surface pigmentation to augment the visual impact of pale caribou antler. While Romeo is the better known of the two, Martha, at her best, was very much his equal. It is only the subject’s pronounced chin, a trait more common in Martha’s oeuvre, that leads us to believe that this is by her hand.
