This mask has the characteristically bold white underpaint typical of Grouse and Atlakim masks, which is sharply contrasted with the glossy black, red, and orange pigment of its facial features and beak. Hawkins has effectively imbued the mask with an intense stare, amplified by the black-and-white concentric-circle eyes and tightly pursed red lips. The mask is topped by feathers and hammered cedar bark, which hang down and frame the face of the Grouse. Hawkins credits his friend and relative, the late Beau Dick (Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw, 1955-2017), as a primary teacher and influence on this work.
