Her approach...While best known for her textile works, Irene Avaalaaqiaq has produced several hundred drawings, over forty of which were translated into graphics at the Baker Lake print shop. Her approach to drawing often differs from her works on cloth. Whereas most of her hangings feature a narrative border that directs the viewer toward the central image, her drawings often radiate from the centre outward. Many of Avaalaaqiaq's iconic visual elements are present in this drawing, yet it is interesting to note that the delicate details on the wolves or foxes and the owls suggest the embroidery common to many Qamani’tuaq textile artists but absent from much of Avaalaaqiaq’s work.
