Indeed, one of her earliest graphics, Dog Sees the Spirits (1960), depicts a solitary black dog looking skyward at a bevy of red bird spirits swirling above. Produced almost thirty years later, this drawing pares that vision down to a single spirit bird and a lone dog. Unlike the 1960 image, printed in only two colours, this beautiful drawing shows Kenojuak’s mastery of both form and colour at full stretch.
