In Ummiakuta (Long Boat), a skin-covered umiaq stretches almost the full width of the sheet, its elongated form interrupted only by four passengers and a single red pennant rising from the centre of the vessel. The repeated figures create a measured progression across the composition, while the finely incised lines describing the hull contrast with the flat areas of colour above. By reducing the scene to its essential forms, Etidlooie transforms a traditional means of travel into an image of remarkable balance, precision and elegance.
