Often described as the youthful counterpart or younger sibling of Thunderbird, Kolus is a powerful supernatural bird that serves as both an ancestral being and a bridge between the human...Often described as the youthful counterpart or younger sibling of Thunderbird, Kolus is a powerful supernatural bird that serves as both an ancestral being and a bridge between the human and spirit worlds. Unlike mature Thunderbirds, Kolus is said to be covered not in feathers but in a dense coat of white down, which it sheds when taking human form. In this cedar carving, Kurtis Antone animates the figure with bold passages of red and green set against a matte black head and beak, emphasizing the sculptural depth of the composition. The work also reflects Antone's affinity for ambitious interpretations of Coast Salish oral traditions and narratives, giving the sculpture a commanding presence that extends well beyond its scale.
