Born in Alert Bay, British Columbia in 1957, Rupert Scow grew up surrounded by the knowledge of his culture and tradition. His great grandfather was Chief John Scow, and his great grandfather on his mother’s side was acclaimed artist Mungo Martin.

Like many of his brothers, he began carving wood in the early 1990s, often working with family members. He also apprenticed with renowned carver Beau Dick, and credits other Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw artists like Wayne Alfred, Vince Shaughnessy and Shawn Karpes for his inspirations. Under their guidance, Rupert became a master carver, creating rattles, bowls, poles, and masks, such as this Grouse Mask. As another member of the Atlakim (translated to the Dance of the Forest Spirits) dance (see lot 82), and the first to enter the dance floor to call forth the other spirits, the Grouse can be recognized for its dance about protection, bravery and courage.
