One figure raises a short jigging rod with a line hanging below it; another carries what appears...In Going Fishing, the subject is made plain by the tools in hand. One figure raises a short jigging rod with a line hanging below it; another carries what appears to be a small pail or tackle bucket; the figure at right holds a kakivak (leister), its pronged end angled toward the ground. The figures are not simply posed with attributes, they are caught in motion, already setting out on their task.
The graphic style is built from broad fields of warm colour and clean-edged forms. Bent knees, tilted heads, lifted arms, and splayed poses give the image its sense of bustle and an almost comic urgency.
As with many prints produced in the North, the image also records a collaboration between designer and maker: the drawing for the textile is by Annie Pitsiulak, while the weaving was executed by Igah Etoangat. In this case, however, the usual structure is intriguingly reversed: in Northern printmaking, both men and women often served as the draughtspeople, while the plate-cutters and printers are largely men. Here, the image begins with a woman’s drawing and is carried into textile form by another woman’s hand, as was so often the case in the weaving produced at Pangnirtung.
