In this striking composition, four geese are arranged in a balanced, rhythmic design, their simplified forms enlivened by richly coloured appliqué and decorative embroidery. The work demonstrates the strong sense of pattern and surface design that has become a defining characteristic of the Baker Lake textile tradition.The embroidery, here, does far more than fill the surface. Hundreds of tiny V-shaped fly stitches break across the blue ground like whitecaps, making the geese appear to fly above choppy water. Their white appliquéd bodies emerge cleanly against this restless field, while dense stitching and dark feather details give each bird definition. The red-orange border is worked with equal intensity, and the jagged inner edge seems almost to contain the movement within. There is scarcely an untouched passage of cloth; stitch by stitch, the artist has turned the entire surface into air, water and motion.
