Utilizing locally harvested porcupine quills, birchbark, and sweetgrass, Anishinaabe quill work artists often incorporated natural forms and complex patterns into their work. In this example, a trio of maple leaves, themselves mirrored in form while more organically arranged on the lid of a round basket. The artist has taken advantage of the two-toned nature of the quills, using the darker shade to create depth in the shape of the leaves, as well as some shadow in the dense field of quills below the leaves. The body of the basket sports a raised braiding, bright white against the quieter, natural tones of the undyed quills and birch bark. The work as a whole is a charming example of a skilled hand in a finished product.
