While best known as one of the pioneering artists of the Cape Dorset print program, Mungitok Kellypalik was also an accomplished sculptor. In this standing polar bear, the elongated neck and gently inclined head create an alert, attentive posture, while the rounded body and sturdy legs convey the animal’s strength. Subtle incised details are confined to the face, paws and shoulders, allowing the sculpture’s silhouette and carefully balanced proportions to take precedence. The varied green stone, with its natural mottling, further animates the surface, complementing the spare carving and emphasizing the monumentality Kellypalik achieved within a modest scale.
