His articulated figures often turn on the simplest of devices: separately carved limbs, a length of string, and just enough movement to animate the whole.
This Mother Carrying Child in her Amauti s an especially unusual and lovely example. Cut from the broad palm of the antler, the work depends almost entirely on the material’s natural silhouette. Its widened plane becomes the bundled body of a mother carrying her young child in the amautiq, while the projecting points extend into her shoulders. From these, Anowtalik suspends two carved arms on string, giving the figure a gentle, almost pendular movement.
