Squat, solid and squarely planted, the bird seems gathered into itself, yet the raised wings give the sculpture an immediate sense of lift and latent movement. The broad head, compressed body and upright wings make the form at once compact and commanding.
The treatment of the plumage is especially effective. Rather than describing individual feathers, the sculptor uses shallow cuts, scored lines and softly raised ridges to divide the wings and breast into broad patterned passages. These thick, simplified markings recall Kenojuak Ashevak’s graphic treatment of birds, where feathers are often set out in strong bands and sweeping sections. In stone, those familiar graphic devices become something heavier and more tactile, catching against the hand and casting small shadows across the surface.
Its scale gives the owl much of its force. Seen at close range, the broad breast, blunt wings and weight of the stone become almost bodily. The simplification of the bird strengthens rather than softens that impression. Shape, surface and pattern work together with unusual power, producing an owl that feels both sculptural and unmistakably connected to the visual language for which Kenojuak became celebrated.
