Many of Shuvinai Ashoona’s creatures live in a kind of harmony with the non-fantastical beings around them, or at least in a state of mutual ignorance to each other. Leaning more towards the dystopic side of her monsters, Tentacles shows a tension between the creature and its surroundings. As tentacles curl and flail, the worlds keep hold with ropes coiled around the creature, tethering it in space. The worlds, “earthly” in first look, have secured the ropes to their continents, desperately holding onto something larger than themselves. As the otherworldly “invader” to those worlds absolutely towers over them, one can easily assume it is the aggressor. On the other hand, the clash could be between humans and the larger world of nature around them, even into their intergalactic borders.
