The present basket is a virtuoso display of workmanship, with densely plain-twined passages alternating with elaborate bands of openwork and spaced twining, their crossed and diagonal elements forming small lattice-like openings. Worked in remarkably well-preserved coloured cotton thread, the false-embroidered decoration includes compressed lozenges and vertically stacked inverted triangles joined at their points to form a cross-like motif, a device encountered in Alaskan basketry and sometimes linked to the long influence of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Aleutian Islands.ND
