The imposing face emerges forcefully from the stone, its heavy brow projecting above deeply set eyes, while the closely gathered features form a stern, almost brooding expression. Blunt planes and deeply cut recesses lend the carving a rugged, elemental character.
Like many of the great works of Kivalliq sculpture, Head stands apart from the conventions commonly associated with Inuit art. Without knowledge of its origins, one might readily look to early twentieth century European sculpture for comparison. Its severe simplicity and uncompromising treatment of stone give the work an unmistakably modern sensibility.
