Rather than depicting the vast tundra, the ever-present Kinngait mountain, or a distant expanse of water, Samayualie turns her attention to a small yet compelling fragment of the land where it meets the water. Each pebble along the shore is rendered with meticulous attention to detail, while rapid yet deliberate coloured-pencil strokes capture the brilliant blue water. Samayualie further frames her composition with a white border, reminiscent of the mat surrounding a photograph. This subtle device speaks to the influence of photography on her drawing practice, lending the scene an intimate, almost cropped quality.
