Initially taught by a fellow ceramicist to Kavik, Yvo Samgushak, Philip would go on to develop his own style in ceramics, and experimented with other media like drawings, jewelry, and stencils.
In Vase with Verdant Hooded Visage, we are treated to a thrown vase with a built face, a singular detail on the vase rather than an all-over motif. Proud from the vase itself, the face stares back at the view with wide eyes and mouth slightly agape. In a broad sense, one can feel this may be a self-portrait; Philip is deaf and can lip read, so perhaps this face is that of one intently observing the conversation at hand.
