Small Masterpieces from the Price Collection
There are many different types of Inuit art collectors; some collect only sculptures and others only works on paper. Some collect by theme and others by artist or region. What truly sets John and Joyce Price apart from the pack is that their taste is as eclectic as it is discerning. Their methodology seems to have been equal parts emotional and intellectual. John and Joyce have been able to see through the chatter and, whether the process is cerebral or visceral, can decide that a piece was something that they “need” to acquire. As a result of his collecting style, John has amassed a collection of artworks of outstanding high quality.
The Prices were also early champions of many of today’s most important artists. Rather than being dissuaded by a lack of “brand recognition,” John and Joyce opted to buy numerous works to congratulate young artists for their efforts and to encourage them to pursue their art. Whether busy setting auction records on “classic” older artworks or shrewdly supporting excellent artists of the younger generation, the Prices’ keen eye and passion have few equals.
John and Joyce intuitively realized that good things often come in small packages and he has never deemed an excellent sculpture to be too small to be worthy of his collection. Quality was always the most important criterion. Interestingly, though, John and Joyce have travelled extensively to participate in gallery openings, many of their acquisitions were made over the Internet, whether by consulting gallery websites or via emailed offerings from the many galleries that John has supported over the years.
As anyone who has taken an art history class can attest, almost every artwork displayed in class appears to be the same size as the projector screen. The same can be said of artworks viewed on a computer monitor. A sculpture that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand can appear relatively monumental onscreen. Our opinion is that while many pieces in this selection of small masterpieces would doubtless be exemplary if significantly larger in scale, they are somehow even more special and intimate just as they are: modestly-sized works of art to be seen, handled, and treasured up close.
